DARWIN’S Evolution tower would be dwarfed by a new 38-storey luxury accommodation building on Mitchell St, if the proposal makes its way through Darwin council and the Development Consent Authority.
The proposed building would have an overall height of 132.5m above ground level, making it more than 30m taller than Evolution on Gardiner.
Top End Properties Pty Ltd have put forward the $115 million proposal for the new building on the site of the current Poinciana Motel, at the corner of Mitchell and McLaughlin St.
The new building would include luxury accommodation, two retail areas, function rooms and a public restaurant and bar on a mezzanine level.

It would also have 198 guest rooms, 23 three bedroom residential units and 190sq m of retail space.
The building, which will be made predominantly of glass, will have a “green wall”, made up of vegetation which will cover the four levels of above ground car parking.
Aimed to draw Asian tourists to the five-star accommodation, the planning proposal has been called the “missing piece” of Darwin.
“The proposed development is envisaged as an integral part of ensuring the city can become recognised regionally throughout Asia as a true ‘gateway’ or ‘door step’ to the quintessential Australian experience, and to continue to drive Darwin’s largely untapped tourism potential, and all of the associated flow on benefits,” the proposal stated.
