Queensland records two cases of community transmission

ONE new case of Covid-19 has been recorded in the Northern Territory overnight, a Tanami mine worker who spent limited time in the NT community.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the man flew to Darwin on Friday, June 25 and was moved into Howard Springs the next day, after being identified as a close contact of the first Newmont mine case.

The worker’s first test returned negative, and his next test positive in the last 24 hours.

Mr Gunner declared no new exposure sites, and said the Top End’s progress battling the outbreak was exemplary.

All are in isolation, with testing underway.

“At this stage we have a high level of confidence that he was not infectious in the community, and there was no additional risk to the community of Alice Springs,” Mr Gunner said.

On Friday authorities will announce whether the Top End will be released from lockdown, with Mr Gunner confirming rules and restrictions would remain in place.

“Right now we are feeling pretty good about where we are at. It is my firm hope that tomorrow morning, we’ll be in a position to confirm if the lockdown will end on time,” he said.

“I do think there’ll be some rules and restrictions in place after lockdown. We will keep working on that today. We will consult with the business community and others will have those answers for you tomorrow.”

There were 3500 Covid-19 tests conducted across the Territory on Wednesday, with a total 6000 in the last two days.
