Man charged with attempted murder, two other men charged, following violence brawl in Karama

Police have charged a 46-year-old man with attempted murder and two other men with acts intended to cause serious harm following a violent brawl that broke out in Karama on Sunday.

UPDATE: POLICE have charged a 46-year-old man with attempted murder following a violent brawl that broke out in Karama on Sunday night.

A 19-year-old and a 20-year-old have also been charged with acts intended to cause serious harm.

Detective Senior Sergeant Annette Cooper commended her colleagues for taking swift action on the matter.

“Investigators were able to quickly track down the alleged offenders and now each of them will face court for their violent actions,” she said.

All three men were remanded to appear at the Darwin Local Court on Tuesday.

Earlier, police confirmed a family feud had broken out, leaving two men, aged 50 and 26, in hospital and requiring surgery.

EARLIER: THREE men are in custody after a violent brawl broke out on Koolinda Cres in Karama.

Police have confirmed a family feud, that lasted for about 10 minutes, led to two men allegedly being stabbed with ‘sharp implements.’

Detective senior sergeant Annette Cooper said it was early days but both the men were known to each other.

The three men currently in custody are believed to be all related and aged 46, 20 and 19.

“It is very concerning and police won’t tolerate this sort of behaviour, particularly in the community streets,” Sgt Cooper said.

“The 50 year old man and 26 year old man in hospital are undergoing surgery but considered to be in a stable condition. We believe they are also related to each other.”

Sgt Cooper also said all men were previously known to police.

After early calls for witnesses police said they were inundated with calls which they are using to further continue their investigations.

The men have not been charged.

EARLIER: BLOOD splatters stain the footpath outside of a residential complex in Karama following a brawl overnight.

It’s understood police set up a crime scene on Monday.

About 10pm on Sunday police received reports of a large disturbance involving men, some armed with poles and other weapons, on Koolinda Cres in Karama.

Two men were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries while others ran from the scene.

EARLIER: TWO people were hospitalised after a fight, which involved shovels and iron bars, broke out in a Darwin suburb.

NT Police Senior Sergeant Richard Howie said they were taken to hospital with lacerations, puncture wounds and bruising after a number of individuals were involved in a street fight in Karama on Koolinda Cres on Sunday night.

“As a result of that a couple of people had to be conveyed to the hospital, with non life threatening injuries but quite nasty,” Sgt Howie said.

“We don’t really know the circumstances of it all, so we’re continuing inquiries this morning to see the reason for the fighting and who the main protagonists were,” he said.

“We want to make people aware of the dangers of resorting to that type of violence.”
