Nightcliff residents fed up with finding their cars damaged and property stolen

Residents of a popular Top End suburb are fed up with the relentless, petty crimes happening in their neighbourhood, with one woman sharing her devastating experience.

OLIVIA Rogers was planning to drive out of the Territory to the next chapter of her life, however that came screaming to a halt when her car window was senselessly smashed.

Ms Rogers left her car on Progress Dr for an hour and half on Sunday afternoon only to find the windows smashed, but nothing taken.

Ms Rogers said she now had no choice but to fly to her next destination and sell her car to her housemate.

“The windows will not be fixed in time so I just had to sell it,” Ms Rogers said.

“I found a little rock on my seat, they must have pegged it really hard to smash my window, also the car parked in front of mine had it’s mirror ripped off too.”

Ms Rogers is not the only resident in Nightcliff upset, surrounding neighbours have also become victims to brazen crimes in the area.

Nightcliff resident Sophie McKay said her family lived in an elevated house near the police station with CCTV and street lights but that did not stop the offenders.

“Someone let themselves in and rummaged around downstairs while we are all asleep upstairs, including the dog

“They went through my husband’s car and emptied out all the coins from the centre console, and left a bit of a mess,” she said.

“His keys were in the vehicle so they could’ve easily drove off in it, but they didn’t.”

Police, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Nicole Manison said there was no silver bullet solution to tackling crime.

“It takes hard work to address generational change and break the cycle of reoffending,” Ms Manison said.

“We want all Territorians to feel safe and we are investing heavily in reducing crime and identifying its root causes.”

Another victim who does not wish to be identified said had her car broken into on her property.

She said it was not the first time she had an intruder enter her residence, after her son caught a man entering the property.

“The worst thing is I see him all the time at our local shops,” she said.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Bland from Strike Force Trident advises there has not been any noticeable spike in property crime in the Nightcliff area.
