Police have charged a 28-year-old man with murder following the death in Malak on Tuesday evening.

UPDATE NOV 18: POLICE have charged a 28-year-old man with murder over the death in Malak on Tuesday.

A 28-year-old man was arrested shortly after the alleged assault, where a 42-year-old man was declared deceased at the scene.

Major Crime Squad has since charged since charged the 29-year-old with murder and breach of bail.

He was remanded to appear before Darwin Local Court on Thursday.

EARLIER: POLICE have confirmed a 42-year-old Malak man’s death is being treated as a homicide.

Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker confirmed the death was being investigated as a homicide at the Wednesay Covid briefing.

Mr Chalker said the death was one of a number of violent alleged assaults which had tied up police resources overnight.

NT Police received reports that a man had been assaulted around 5.40pm on Tuesday.

Police arrived shortly after.

The 42-year-old man was declared deceased at the scene and the 28-year-old was arrested nearby.

A Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said charges against a 28-year-old man arrested at the scene were still being confirmed.

It is unknown when the 28-year-old is expected to appear before the courts.

EARLIER: NEIGHBOURS have spoken out after witnessing a fight break out at the house where a man died on Tuesday night.

Kelly, who asked for her surname to be withheld, said while the residents of the house sometimes got a “bit rowdy”, the alleged violence was unexpected.

“There were a couple of people fighting,” she said.

“There was a guy who was running away and was hit by a white chair in the driveway and that’s all we saw because we just went inside and shut up.”

She said she didn’t realise anyone had died until getting up on Wednesday morning.

“It doesn’t make us feel unsafe, it just makes us feel sad that that happens in our neighbourhood,” Kelly said.

“The police came pretty quickly, generally when we do call about stuff they come pretty quickly.

“That’s the thing you take away is it’s sad that there is still violence.

“It’s a bit scary when you wake up and find out someone has passed away across the road, it’s a bit scary.”

A crime scene has been declared in Malak and investigations are continuing.
