Police received reports of a single vehicle crash about 11.30pm Saturday night.

It is believed a utility vehicle, carrying seven people, was travelling along Marindja Road, when a passenger in the tray fell out off.

The 23-year-old male sustained fatal injuries in the fall.

The rest of the people in the car then drove the man out of the area until they could reach phone reception on Litchfield Park Road where police and St John Ambulance attended.

The 35-year-old driver tested positive for alcohol and is expected to be charged later Sunday.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Corey Borton said the Major Crash Unit was currently on scene investigating.

“A report will be prepared for the coroner,” he said.

The road toll now stands at 17, compared to seven this time last year.

Valuables stolen

A WALLET, an iPad, headphones, laptops and a number of other items of value were stolen from two Alice Springs homes on the same street.

Southern Watch Commander Mick Milde said a miscommunication between a couple about locking a door to their home on Nicker Cres, resulted in a stolen wallet and the contents inside on Wednesday night.

“I think one had gone outside to do something and thought the other one was coming, anyway whatever happened they left the door ajar for that period of time,” Cmmr Milde said.

Only just down the road, another Nicker Cres home at an unknown time was broken into via the doggie door.

“So obviously a small person,” he said.

“A laptop, iPad and headphones were stolen from that address.”

Cmmr Milde warned Territorians of the recent spike in crime and to remain aware.

“They’re very opportunistic at the moment, everyone has just got to be really careful, it’s a shame but it’s just the way it is at the moment,” he said.

Ciggie woes

8AM, WED APR 27: WHILE driving along Zuccoli Parade, a 20-year-old man crashed into a light pole after he dropped his cigarette and “bent down” to pick it up, at 6am on Wednesday.

Northern Watch Commander Mick Fields said the man was not under the influence of any substances but “he just wasn’t paying attention”.

“Lucky there was no actual power going through the power pole, even though it got knocked over and partially on the road, it wasn’t live,” Cmmr Fields.

“The road was partially blocked for only ten minutes before the fireys got there and they pulled it off and he’ll be dealt with at a later time for not paying attention, driving without due care.”

Police, Fire and Rescue and St John NT all attended the scene.

No one was injured.

Animal attacks and mishaps

7AM, TUES APR 26: PARAMEDICS were called to a series of animal attacks and mishaps over the long weekend.

St Johns Ambulance NT operations manager Craig Garraway said four Territorians were left with injuries after interacting with dogs, snakes, cattle, and horses.

Mr Garraway told ABC Darwin that a 55-year-old woman was thrown from a horse at Freds Pass, Daly Ranges, at 11.30am, Saturday.

He said she was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

“(She) was suffering some back injuries, as you would imagine. It’s a bit of a high fall there,” Mr Garraway said.

Paramedics were called to a property 100km from Tennant Creek after a 20-year-old station worker was pinned between a fence by a cow.

Mr Garraway said the “quite painful” incident left the young woman with leg injuries and she was taken to Tennant Creek Hospital.

Following a series of rescues on the Larapinta Trail, Mr Garraway said first responders were again called to the popular Alice Springs hiking track on Sunday.

He said the 55-year-old woman was bitten by a snake around 7.30pm and was taken by park rangers and paramedics to Alice Springs Hospital.

“It’s getting hot up there so the snakes are out,” Mr Garraway warned.

Mr Garraway said the youngest victim of the weekend of animal attacks was a 20-month-old boy.

He said the toddler was bitten by a large dog at the botanic gardens on Monday.

Mr Garraway said he was left with superficial injuries, and was able to go home with his parents after being assessed by paramedics.

“We’ve had a few dog bite attacks recently … so if you have a dog keep them locked up.

“There’s nothing worse than your dog attacking somebody and the consequences of everything that happens after that.”
