UPDATE 8AM, TUES 12: EMERGENCY services have rescued another group of hikers just days after a 22-year-old man died on the Larapinta Trail.

St John Ambulance NT operations manager Craig Garraway said paramedics were sent up the trail in a four-wheel drive after a group of hikers got into strife.

“A couple of those younger people were suffering as a result of the heat,” Mr Garraway told ABC Darwin.

“It appears three of four of the people were in that group were suffering from dehydration.

“They were all OK in the end, and able to continue on.”

Ms Garraway said there was an increase in rescue operations at the popular walking track, north of Alice Springs.

“It just highlights that the weather is changing a bit down there and there are a hell of a lot of people on the Larapinta Trail,” he said.

“(If you’re) enjoying the views, make sure you have got plenty of water and take your time on the walk.”

He said the majority of recent rescues were due to dehydration.

Church-going granny thwarts youth carjacker

THREE teenage youths were allegedly behind a string of brazen and senseless crimes committed in the Northern suburbs of Darwin on Sunday morning.

Northern Watch Commander Rob Overall said a woman and her two young children were walking through the Casuarina Shopping Centre Carpark when she was asked for money by the youths, aged between 14-17 years old.

One of the youths snatched her car keys from her hand and stole her nearby parked vehicle, police say.

In the ensuing hours, the youths allegedly crashed the stolen vehicle into a mini school bus nearby Wanguri, where the group allegedly then ran away from the area and continued their crime spree.

Soon after, as an 80-year-old woman was driving to church in the area, one of the youth offenders allegedly opened her passenger door and attempted to carjack her vehicle, Cmmr Overall said.

“The youth was thwarted in his attempts after the intervention of other road users who came to her assistance,” he said.

Strike Force Trident and the Dog operations unit quickly responded to the crimes and as a result, all three youth offenders were arrested and charged and will appear in court on Monday.

“It will be alleged that one of the youths has breached a suspended sentence order and two have breached their bail in relation to this offending,” he said.

Police would like to thank the members of the public who have already assisted with inquiries and urge anyone with further information to contact police on 131 444 using police reference number 9969380.”
