Police charge 32yo after alleged hit-and-run that resulted in man’s death in Wagaman

A 32-year-old man has been charged after he was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run that killed a man in Wagaman.

UPDATE, SATURDAY: A 32-year-old man has been charged after he was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run that killed a man in Wagaman.

The 32-year-old was arrested after he handed himself into Major Crash detectives on Friday night.

A car —a white Toyota Camry — was located and seized by police soon after.

The man has been charged with hit and run causing death.

He was bailed to appear in the Darwin Local Court on Monday.

UPDATE, FRIDAY: POLICE say the driver of a car involved in a hit and run in Wagaman continued driving through the suburbs and surrounds following the incident.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said officers were aware the driver continued inbound along Trower Rd before turning left at the intersection of Rapid Creek Rd. The vehicle then travelled into Nightcliff.

“We think it’s likely that the driver commenced their journey in or around Wagaman. We know it turned from Gsell St onto Vanderlin Dr and turned left onto Trower Rd out the front of Casuarina Square.

“We know that the driver continued driving along Trower Rd towards the CBD, travelling past Alawa and Jingili before turning left onto Rapid Creek Rd, Millner.

“It’s quite possible that the older model white sedan has minimal or even no damage.

“We continue to appeal for assistance from the community to help identify the vehicle. Please take a minute to look at the CCTV footage. If you’re familiar with the vehicle, you might recognise it.

“If you know of a vehicle that matches the description that, since Tuesday night, is now not parked in its usual spot or parked unusually or perhaps been washed or repaired unusually this week, anything that arouses suspicion, police are very interested in this information.

“If anyone with dashcam footage was travelling along these roads from 11.10pm onwards and captured footage of the vehicle, please let us know on 131 444.”

EARLIER: The 52-year-old man who was struck by a vehicle in Wagaman on Tuesday has died.

The pedestrian was hit and knocked to the road as he crossed Vanderlin Drive at around 11.10pm on Tuesday night.

He was admitted to Royal Darwin Hospital following the incident and remained in intensive care before passing away on Wednesday evening.

Major Crash and Crime Division detectives continue to investigate and seek assistance from the community to identify the vehicle involved.

The vehicle involved in the incident is described as a white sedan with black vertical stripes across its frame.

The vehicle had turned right on Vanderlin Dr from Gsell St, knocking the pedestrian to the ground while making a right-hand turn but after doing so continued driving without stopping.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said police again appeal to the driver and those with knowledge of the vehicle involved.

“It is not too late to do the right thing and come forward,” Mr Lindner said.

“With assistance from the community, it is only a matter of time until police identify the driver and the vehicle.

“If any residents or businesses along Gsell Street, Vanderlin Drive and Trower Road have CCTV and are yet to speak to police, please do so to assist the investigation.

UPDATE: A 52-year-old male remains in critical condition after being struck by a white sedan on Vanderlin Dr on Tuesday night.

The victim was struck by a white sedan while crossing Vanderlin Dr opposite the pharmacy near Casuarina Square.

The pedestrian had just done some shopping and crossed the road at the point of the pharmacy.

The suspected vehicle had turned right on Vanderlin Dr from Gsell St knocking the pedestrian to the ground while making a right hand turn but after doing so continued driving without stopping.

Police were notified of the incident shortly after 11pm and the man was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a non-responsive state and remains in a critical condition.

Major Crash Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision finding CCTV of the event though the driver of the vehicle remains unidentified.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner appealed to witnesses or the driver themselves to come forward with information on the incident.

“We’re appealing to any witnesses who saw the crash and we’re making a direct appeal to the driver to come forward,” Mr Lindner said.

“If you were the driver of the vehicle or if you’re a passenger of the vehicle or if you have since learned who was involved please do the right thing, it’s not too late, notify police.”

UPDATE: Police are calling for witnesses following a hit and run in Darwin.

About 11.15pm on Tuesday a vehicle struck a male pedestrian as he crossed Vanderlin Dr, Wagaman.

The unknown driver did not stop to assist the man, who was knocked to the ground.

The victim was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital with serious injuries.

Police closed off Vanderlin Dr while Major Crash detectives worked to process the scene and record evidence. The crime scene was closed and the road reopened this morning.

“Police are appealing for the driver of the vehicle to make contact with police as soon as possible. Detectives are presently reviewing CCTV footage of the incident,” Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said.

“Any witnesses to the crash are urged to contact police on 131 444.

“The driver, or passengers of the vehicle, or anyone with any information who can identify those involved are also urged to make contact with police, and can do so anonymously if they wish through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersnt.com.au.”

EARLIER: MAJOR Crash Unit is investigating after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in Darwin’s northern suburbs in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The inbound lanes of Vanderlin Dr between Lee Point Road and Trower Road, Wagaman, were shut until about 8am.

Police said the crash was not fatal but the victim was left badly injured.
