A popular Darwin swimming spot has been shut down over fears that the ‘Lake Alexander monster’ is once again lurking in its depths.

On Wednesday the City of Darwin confirmed that Lake Alexander at East Point Reserve has been temporarily closed today “as a precautionary measure”.

“We received an unconfirmed report from a member of the public regarding the suspected sighting of a small shark,” a spokesman said.

“City of Darwin teams are working to verify the accuracy of the reported sighting.”

The council said in the interest of public safety, the lake was closed to all water activities as NT Fisheries investigate the matter.

City of Darwin said it would advised the public when the lake was safe to reopen, and apologised for any inconvenience.

This is the third time in 12 months the lake has been shut down due to sightings of the mysterious beast known to the NT News as the Lake Alexander Monster.

In September last year the swimming spot was closed for three days following a suspected shark sighting, with a similar shark scare shutting down the lake in July.

In April 2022 the lake was closed for two weeks to hunt for what was reported to be a 1m-long monster shark, which turned out to be a large milkfish and a couple barramundi.

A similar monster hunting adventure in December 2023 — dubbed the search for Loch Alexander Monster 3.0 — turned out to be a large milkfish and a few mullets in the water.

Lake Alexander has also been shut down repeatedly this year for water quality issues, with bacteria outbreaks in March and January.
