TERRITORY Economic Reconstruction Commission co-chair Andrew Liveris says he is optimistic the Territory we will see positive momentum in quick order in the wake of the Federal Budget.

Mr Liveris said the Federal budget is very symbiotic with the priorities of the NT Government and the work of the Territory Economic Reconstruction Commission which he revealed has progressed to the important recommendation drafting phase of the Final Report.

Mr Liveris said the Territory and the job of the Reconstruction Commission will benefit from the federal budget’s focus on stabilising the economy and growing jobs with sectors that matter to the Territory.

“The focus on sectors such as manufacturing, gas, renewables and infrastructure, is very aligned,” he told the Sunday Territorian.

Fellow NT Reconstruction Commission co-chair Paul Henderson was equally positive.

“Key principals to rebound and grow the Territory’s economy are represented in the Federal Budget – that shows a confidence in the Territory’s economic future,” Mr Henderson said.

“The Commission’s Final Report in late November will continue to build on these initial investments with a clear focus to shift gears on the Territory’s economy.”

Mr Liveris and Mr Henderson said with the clock now ticking on the recommendation drafting phase, Commissioners will continue their critical work to investigate additional economic opportunities for the Territory and carefully review public submissions.

Moving into the recommendation phase is in line with the Commission’s plan to have the Final Report completed in late November to hand over to the Northern Territory Chief Minister, Michael Gunner.

“The Commission has a laser like focus on shaping the Territory’s economy to attract private sector investment,” Mr Liveris said.

“The work of the Commission is granular and is working for all Territorians on finding ways to help the Territory to lead on economic stabilisation and growth coming out of this COVID crisis.

“Everyone in the public and private sector is exhibiting great engagement and cause for optimism”.

Mr Henderson said the wealth of experience and expertise from key areas brought to the table by each member of this Commission will be well represented in the Final Report.

“The Final Report will outline recommendations to shift gears on the Territory’s economy by unlocking private sector investment which will lead to more jobs,” Mr Henderson said.

“It will serve as an economic road map to the Territory’s true potential – a place that more people can call home with strong, continued economic growth.”
