How the NT will change with King Charles to ascend the throne

The Northern Territory will follow precise protocols in the coming days and weeks to mark King Charles’ accession to the throne. Here is how to be part of history in Darwin.

King Charles III speech was ‘a speech of unity’

While most Territorians come to terms with the first death of a Monarch in their lifetime, Government is working behind the scenes to oil the wheels of change.

Protocol NT is overseeing a number of transitional arrangements to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the transition to King Charles III.

For instance, Protocol NT has advised the NT Government to dress in ‘dark colours’ for all public engagements during the 10 day period to the funeral for Her Majesty The Queen.

Proclamation of the ‘accession of His Majesty The King, Charles the Third, the Grace of God King of Australia and his other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth’ will be announced by Governor-General David Hurley at noon on Sunday, September 11 at Parliament House, Canberra.

Also on Sunday, the ceremonial reading of the Proclamation of a new Sovereign will be conducted at 12.30pm by NT Administrator Vicki O’Halloran in NT parliament, followed by contributions from Chief Minister Natasha Fyles and Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro.

NT flag marshals are directly provided written Flag Notification advice following confirmed advice from the Australian Government.

In accordance with Australian flag protocol, the Australian national flag and other flags in the set will be flown at full‑mast on Sunday, September 11 from 11.30am (NT time) until dusk at which time the flags should be returned to half-mast until the day after Her Majesty’s funeral.

This advice applies to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags.

In Australia, there will not be an official mourning period. The day of the National Memorial Service will be a National Day of Mourning for Australia.

Protocol NT said the Territory Government was following official advice from the Commonwealth.
