SEVERAL remote childcare centres are exceeding quality standards, according to the industry’s peak body.

Childcares across the nation are rated by the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority, which assesses a facility’s education program, s health and safety, staffing arrangements and more.

Among remote centres rated as Exceeding the National Quality Standard (NQS) are Yirrkala Preschool, Ngukurr School Council Child Care, Larapinta Child and Family Early Learning Centre and Alice Springs Child Care Centre.

In the Top End, Casuarina Childcare centre is still one of the best.

The community based, non-for-profit organisation is a vital to the significant number of families in the Casuarina community.

The centre is rated overall by the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority as Exceeding NQS. Out of seven quality areas, it rates Exceeding NQS in four categories (physical environment, staffing arrangements, collaborative partnerships with families and communities, governance and leadership).

Casuarina Childcare Centre Inc director Alice Branco said the centre was accessible and supportive of children and families.

“We provide full time, part time and emergency care to the community,” Ms Branco said.

“It caters for the needs of all socio-economic background families including Indigenous Australian, carers, refugees and many multicultural backgrounds families.”

Ms Branco said the centre also catered for children at risk or with special needs.

“We have had generations of family attending our services,” she said.

“We also have children who have been our clients when they were children.”

The centre rates exceedingly well under the Northern Territory Child Care ratings infogram.

Offering above the award wages and other incentives, the centre claims to have exceptional staff retention rates.

“The board of Management has invested in staff,” she said.

“We have not had staff turnover for many years, including relief workers, our staff leave when they are at the retired age.”
