FORMER Northern Territory administrator John Anictomatis was born in Piraeus, Greece in 1945 and immigrated to Australia with his parents and two brothers in 1955.
Australia and Darwin has been his home since, but he remains proudly Greek, proud of his Greek ancestors and their accomplishments
This week, along with the Greek Australian community, he is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution.

Annual commemorations mark the declaration of the 1821 revolt in Greece against the 400 years of rule by the Ottoman Empire.
The War of Independence eventually led to Greece’s recognition as an independent state.
Yesterday was the official anniversary, but Darwin’s Greek community will have events at the weekend to mark the occasion.
Mr Anictomatis, who fought for his adopted country in the Vietnam War with the Australian Army’s 9th Battalion, said being Greek means being the best possible person you can be.
Mr Anictomatis has been the Honorary Consul for Greece in the Northern Territory, for 30 years. It is a role in which he has provided dedicated service to the local Greek community. “Darwin is blessed with a large harmonious cultural mix and the Greeks embrace being a part of that,” Mr Anictomatis said.

“The 200 year anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the past, assess the present and help shape the future. “While we paused yesterday to mark March 25 as the official anniversary, we have special celebrations continuing at the Greek School on Saturday and there will be a wreath laying ceremony at the church on Sunday.”
