A HOUSE has burnt down on the remote Elcho Island.
A grassfire in the township of Galiwin’ku burnt down the unoccupied house yesterday at 2pm.
NT Police Watch Commander Len Turner said there were initial concerns that someone may have been in the house, however those concerns were quashed.
A neighbour alerted authorities, who then evacuated the area.
“The fire started to threaten other houses, emergency services managed to contain the fire to the single house, a vehicle was burnt,” he said.
Fire investigators and detectives will travel to the North East Arnhem Land community to investigate the fire.
A crime scene has been established.
Watch Cmdr Turner said it was too early to say if the fire was suspicious.
