Greek Easter fireworks in Darwin CBD cause Triple-zero caller influx on Saturday night

Despite Darwin’s CBD residents being warned to expect noise, emergency operators were still faced with a deluge of panicked callers on Saturday night.

TRIPLE-0 operators were inundated with callers from Darwin’s CBD reporting “explosions”.

Darwin watch commander Richard Howie said the deluge of calls hit the switchboard just after midnight.

“There was a bit of trepidation initially,” Mr Howie said.

“We got dozens of calls so obviously people in the city were a bit concerned.”

But, as reported in the NT News on Saturday, the cause was actually pyrotechnics being let off as part of Greek Easter celebrations.
