Housing affordability conditions at ‘the worst level they’ve been at for at least 30 years’

A Territory company has been awarded a $699,000 contract to clean up dumped cars and other illegal waste from the Holtze area as plans to develop 11,000 lots move forward.

In total, the Northern Territory government is investing $186m for land development in the NT in hopes of meeting housing needs.

Land in the greater Holtze area, on the outskirts of Darwin, has been identified as the next urban residential development for the city.

To make the first stage of land development ready, the Territory government is building district level infrastructure such as widening and extending roads, water and sewer mains and electrical feeders.

These works will be preceded by a targeted site clean-up to remove car bodies and other illegal dumping activities.

Territory company NTEX Pty Ltd has been awarded the $699,000 contract to undertake the site clean-up works.

Construction of enabling infrastructure for the Holtze land release is planned to be delivered in two main stages, Part A and Part B, including construction of enabling infrastructure comprising sewerage, water supply, power, communications, roads, drainage and landscaping.

These enabling infrastructure works will support development of the Holtze Land Release with the tender for Part A works to be released next week and works anticipated to commence in June, subject to weather.

Design of the Part B enabling infrastructure works is under way and is anticipated to be tendered in late 2024.

Any additional enabling infrastructure for the Greater Holtze area is expected to be delivered in future stages, subject to outcomes of planning work under the Greater Holtze Area Plan which is currently under way.

Residential subdivisions are also being delivered in major centres across the Territory including Kilgariff in Alice Springs and in Katherine East.

A developer for the Holtze Land Release is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

“For more homes to be built we need more land. To do this we are implementing the Bringing Land to Market report,” Chief Minister Eva Lawler said.

“The Territory Labor government is working towards creating a steady pipeline of land release for more homes, as our workforce and population grows.

“Clean-up works occurring at Holtze is the next stage in getting lots ready for new builds.”

Infrastructure Minister Joel Bowden said bringing the land to market would create opportunities for Territorians to enter the property market.

“The first Holtze Land Release of 46ha will have more than 530 residential lots of varied sizes as well as community purpose land,” he said.
