PLANNING for the development of two new suburbs around Palmerston will be fast-tracked in the latest push to bolster the Territory’s population and economic growth.
The NT government will spend $44m over the next two years for “enabling infrastructure” of Holtze and Kowandi, which it hopes will house 15,000 once fully built out. The majority of funding will go toward developing Holtze first.
It comes after the Planning Commission in recent years identified Holtze, Kowandi, Howard Springs North and Holtze North as potential new development corridors.
Enabling infrastructure includes power, water and sewage connections for homes.
Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Minister Eva Lawler said the plans would contribute to the growth of Palmerston and the growth of the Territory’s economy.
“Holtze will be the first suburb delivered as part of a future Greater Holtze Area Plan,” Ms Lawler said.
“The Greater Holtze area is close to the Palmerston CBD, Yarrawonga, the Palmerston Regional Hospital and significant transport corridors.”
Public feedback on the government’s development plans is open until July 1 on the Planning Commission website.
Maps published by the Planning Commission show much of the land earmarked for development will be crown land. However, areas of Kowandi are commonwealth land while there are also substantial areas held privately.
