Fires pop up across the Top End as fireworks set off in their thousands for Cracker Night

Authorities rushed to fires across the Top End overnight as thousands of Territorians set off fireworks for Cracker Night.

EMERGENCY services rushed to scrub and grass fires popping up all over the Territory overnight, including multiple bushfires across the Top End.

At 10pm on Sunday NT Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) warned locals of a bushfire in Sorrento Cl, Durack with authorities working to contain the fire and smoke impacting visibility along Tiger Brennan Dr.

Earlier warnings were released for bushfires along Windmill Rd in Rum Jungle and Marrakai Track, 10km south of the Arnhem Hwy.

About 8pm Assistant Chief Fire Officer Joshua Fischer said crews were rapidly responding to fires.

“From around 7.30pm, the Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service has seen an increase in operational demand throughout the Territory,” he said.

“Volunteers are assisting career members in the Palmerston area as we respond to multiple incidents in the greater Darwin region.

“In the Alice Springs and Tennant Creek Emergency Response Areas, career, auxiliary and volunteer firefighters are currently responding to several incidents. Members in Katherine and Nhulunbuy have also responded to numerous grass fires so far.”
