THE lights at Garden’s Oval will be able to be turned up to 500 lux between Thursday and Saturday from now on if Darwin Council accepts a recommendation from its executive at Tuesday night’s regular meeting.
The recommendation follows a trial of the higher powered lights between April and June this year that allowed Cricket NT to hold junior and senior matches at the venue between 6pm and 9pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

As no objections were received during the trial period, the recommendation will be to extend the trial on a permanent basis.
“It is recommended that the hours of use for Gardens Oval lights continue to be restricted to no later than 9pm Monday to Saturday,” the agenda reads.
“It is also recommended that council only consider applications for use of Gardens Oval lights up to 500 lux on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday for one-off events.
“The use of Gardens Oval for night sporting matches contributes to the priority of A Safe, Liveable and Healthy City — support the strengthening of social ties and support networks in local communities.”
