A 26-year-old Alice Springs man was arrested on Sunday after an almost five-hour siege that followed an unsuccessful police pursuit.
Police said that around 12pm on Sunday, the Alice Springs Criminal Investigations Branch received information that the man, who had an outstanding arrest warrant for domestic violence offences, was at Alice Springs hospital.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle he was using as he left the hospital but the offender failed to stop, which prompted a pursuit that was soon terminated on South Terrace for safety reasons.
The 26-year-old then drove to a residence, where he was located inside the premises allegedly armed with edged weapons.
Police stepped back and established a cordon outside the residence.
The man retreated into the house and periodically engaged with police through the front screen door.
On one occasion he allegedly produced a jerry can of fuel and threatened to set the house on fire.
Negotiators attended the scene and additional resources were deployed and the offender surrendered and was arrested without further incident.
He was taken into police custody and charges are expected to follow.
