A FIRST responder on the scene of a horror buggy crash at Gunn Point on Tuesday evening — which left four women hospitalised — said they were “very lucky” to only walk away with broken bones and some serious abrasions, after witnessing what he said was a harrowing crash.

Grant Menzies was camping with his wife Kat Haywood when they saw four girls zoom past at about 40km/h on Gunn Point Beach, seconds before they crashed.

“I heard this massive bang,” Mr Menzies said.

“There were people everywhere out of the vehicle — probably 10 to 15 metres away from it — so they were thrown quite some way in the crash.

“There was blood coming out of their faces, neck and mouth and they were all very dazed.

“I went straight to the first girl who had half an ear hanging off. It was torn in half and would have needed a lot of stitches. A nurse (who also happened to be camping nearby and attended the scene) helped me stick it back together again so we could tape it up and bandage her head.

“She also had a massive cut on her neck that was about eight centimetres long, and was a centimetre deep that just missed her jugular vein, so she was very lucky.”

He said another passenger sustained an “egg the size of a tennis ball on her head” and her “face was smashed, which also looked like there were bits of teeth missing.”

He said the buggy rolled over when the driver attempted to make a turn.

Ms Haywood said they saw the buggy flipped over with the passengers “strewn across the sand”.

“My husband just grabbed the first aid kit, and I grabbed my phone to call emergency services and we raced on down there. Luckily there were two other nurses camped nearby.”

One woman was discharged from the Royal Darwin Hospital on Wednesday, while the three others remain in hospital in a stable condition.

Northern Territory police said they were investigating the crash.

“CareFlight conveyed two of the women to Royal Darwin Hospital, and two women were transported to RDH by St John Ambulance.

“Investigations into the incident are underway.”
