“A lot of them that know we’re selling the store … have come up and said ‘we’re really sorry you’re leaving,’” she said.
Ms Hartley relinquishes control of the iconic store on Monday, with Best Foods co-owner Rubin Poulose taking the reins.
“He has no intention of changing what’s here now. He might add a few things,” she said.
Stuart Park Corner Store includes fresh fruit and veg, a Bottlemart, newspapers and Golden Casket and Tatts Lotto.
She said she plans to take holiday to see family in Queensland before returning to the NT for a wet season Christmas.
“It’s time to move on, my husband is in his early seventies and I’m in my mid-sixties.”
Ms Hartley has also been active in advocating for the Territory’s retail sector and liquor stores, reminiscing on the time the NT Government tried to make her get a fish licence to sell tinned tuna.
In June last year she resigned as president of the Australian Liquor Stores Association NT, putting her shopfront up for sale but vowing to remain living in Darwin.
