POLICE have handed out fines to flagrant rule-breakers in the CBD, Howard Springs and the Darwin International Airport.

In a statement on Wednesday morning, NT PFES revealed three men and two women aged in their 20s were busted breaching Covid-19 rules at “commercial accommodation” on Mitchell St, in Darwin’s CBD.

A 48-year-old man and 67-year-old man were caught not remaining in their dongas at Howard Springs in separate incidents.

And a 53-year-old man from Wulagi who was walking his dogs along Larkin Ave, Marrara near the Darwin International Airport was fined after refusing to wear a mask.

Australian Federal Police allege the man repeatedly refused to wear a mask when asked to do so by police, and refused to provide identification.

AFP officers went to his address on Tuesday afternoon and handed him an infringement notice for failing to comply with the Northern Territory Chief Health Officer’s directive.

AFP Darwin Airport Police Commander Superintendent Matt Ballard said it was a timely reminder for the public that health directives applied to airports and the surrounding area.

“The community in the Northern Territory by and large continue to do the right thing and comply with the Northern Territory’s Chief Health Officer’s directives,” Supt Ballard said.

Incident controller Sachin Sharma said the police were continuing to enforce the chief health officer’s directions.

“The directions are made to reduce movement and minimise contact within the community,” Mr Sharma said.

“We need everyone to abide by the directions if we are want to minimise the period we are in lockdown.

“For the most part, the public has done a great job during this lockdown; it’s a small minority who are putting themselves and the community at risk.”
