Dry Season brings cold weather to the Northern Territory

Territorians have rugged up in recent days as the Dry Season has properly taken hold, with the Top End recording its coldest night in almost a year.

Cold weather to spread across Aust for the rest of the week

Territorians have rugged up and thrown on the jumpers as the Top End experienced its coldest night in almost a year.

Warmer clothing has become a more common sight in recent days across the Territory as the Dry Season has truly taken hold, leading to cooler mornings.

The temperature in Darwin, according to Darwin Airport measurements, has not gone beyond 30 degrees since 5.30pm Wednesday and has been as low as 14.9 degrees.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Sally Cutter said recent nights were the coldest Top Ender’s had experienced all year, and the coldest since July last year.

However, said that for Central Australian’s at least, who have been experienced even cooler temperatures that the weather will go up into the next week.

The trend is expected to be the same in the Top End, with temperatures rising steadily through the week with minimum temps of 20 forecast for Friday.

“In Central Australia, even though it is quite cold we are going to see those temperatures slowly warm up over the next few days,” Ms Cutter said.

“The Top End will also rise, but not quite as much as down south, Central Australia could see temperatures up around 26 degrees by the end of the week, compared to the high teens.

“The mornings are still going to be brisk, but by the time we get to Wednesday we’re looking at minimum eight degrees so still cool but not those really, really cold nights.”

Ms Cutter also warned those heading out camping over the long weekend to ensure they had their sleeping bags and warmer clothing.

“Temperatures drop particularly in the middle parts of the Dry Season,” she said.

So, if you’re camping away from the coast, you should make sure you have your sleeping bag and a blanker so you don’t get too cool at night.”
