Darwin City Council has extended its ban on former Lyons Ward councillor Amye Un for another year.
The ‘Laksa Queen’ was issued a trespass notice in August last year banning her from entering council buildings and facilities for 12 months.
She resigned from her position as councillor as part of her candidacy in the NT election, but had previously been forced to attend council meetings via video link.
At the time of issuing its first trespass notice, Council said it had handed Ms Un a code of conduct warning for a personal social media post it deemed inappropriate.
Ms Un allegedly responded to the warning with threatening social media posts, prompting the legal action to be taken against her.
Speaking to the NT News on Tuesday, Ms Un said the posts were misinterpreted due to a language barrier and it was “ridiculous” the ban had been extended.
“They’re not giving me a reason,” she said.
“I’ve done nothing wrong. The Council is not respecting me as an elected member.”
A City of Darwin spokeswoman said the trespass notice was necessary to “ensure a safe workplace” for staff.
“During her time as an elected member, there were multiple substantiated breaches of the Code of Conduct by Amye Un, including a prohibition on bullying, and to date the various independently sanctioned remedial actions associated with those breaches – including training, mediation and written apologies – have not been completed,” she said.
“Should Amye Un wish to return to her role as an elected member, the trespass notice does not affect her ability to carry out her duties as she is still able to attend council briefings, council meetings and relevant committee meetings via video conference while the trespass notice is in effect.
“The safety and wellbeing of City of Darwin staff is of upmost priority and these measures have been put in place to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of staff.”
