RESIDENTS across several Darwin and Palmerston suburbs will this week be asked to help out in a dress rehearsal of the next official Australia census, due in 2021.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics is asking 4000 households in parts of Malak, Karama, Anula, Wulagi, Moul-den, Woodroffe, Gray, Driver and Roseberry to check their letterboxes for instructions on participating in the 2020 Census Test this week.

The large-scale Census Test takes place tomorrow, with Darwin and Palmerston participants joining 100,000 other households throughout Australia after the letters went out last week.

ABS Census executive director Andrew Henderson said the Census Test was “designed to ensure the Census is easy for people to complete, our processes work and the Census form captures information accurately”.

“This is the biggest test we’ll run before the Census next year, and it will help us to identify where we need to adapt and refine our processes,” he said.

“People in the Northern Territory will be able to complete their Census Test form as soon as they receive the instructions, and will have another couple of days to complete the form beyond Census Test night if they need it. Participation is voluntary, but we encourage everyone, who is invited to participate to do so.”

Mr Henderson said, just like on Census night, it was important for test participants to include everyone who was staying at the residence at the time — including babies and visitors.

Residents will be able to complete the test on paper or online, but not all households will be asked to participate, so anyone who did not receive a letter is not required to do anything.

The next nationwide Census will be held on August 10 next year, and will include new questions on health conditions and Australian Defence Force service.
