The new date for Cracker Night has been announced.
Territorians will be able to blow up fireworks and celebrate all that it means to be a Territorian on Sunday, August 29.
Chief Minister Michael Gunner revealed the date on his Facebook page this morning, with a post that simply read “Sunday. August 29.” followed by a fireworks emoji and the hashtag #territorytogether.
Cracker Night is a key celebration part of Territory Day, which is held on July 1.
However this year’s Territory Day celebrations had to be postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak in the NT from a Tanami gold mine.
At a press conference this morning, Mr Gunner said August 29 had been selected as the new date so the Territory could join with the annual Freedom Day festival, which marks the birth of the Aboriginal land rights movement, when Vincent Lingiari walked off the Wave Hill cattle station and demanded improved pay and working conditions.
“I promised one hell of a party this year,” Mr Gunner said.
“It is fitting that on Territory Day, Territorians come together as one to honour Vincent and the legends of the walk-off, the freedoms they won for Aboriginal workers were freedoms for workers everywhere.”
