THE investigation into the 2019 shooting death of Yuendumu teen Kumanjayi Walker has so far cost more than $4m.

In Budget Estimates in June, Blain MLA Mark Turner asked Police Minister Kate Worden what the total cost to police was of investigating the shooting.

In answer, as of May 31, 2022 a total $4,039,218.92 has been spent on the investigation, “inclusive of the committal hearing, trial and coronial inquest”.

A second question from Mr Turner to Ms Worden asked how many expert reports were ordered by police in relation to the shooting.

The answer was five.

The coronial inquest into Mr Walker’s death begins in September, six months after Constable Zach Rolfe was acquitted on all charges in the NT Supreme Court.

The inquest, headed by newly-appointed Coroner Elisabeth Armitage, is scheduled to begin on September 5 in Yuendumu before moving to the Alice Springs Local Court.

Ms Worden has been contacted for further comment about the cost.
