THE Palmerston War Memorial Park has been vandalised overnight in an “absolutely disgraceful” act just days before ANZAC Day.
Statues of ANZACS in the park in front of the memorial were “bent in half” and plants were ripped out of the ground overnight.
Palmerston RSL secretary Clayton Richards told Mix104.9 that the vandalism made him “extremely angry”, especially so close to ANZAC Day.
“It’s a memorial which is a sacred place for people,” he said.
“It’s a kick in the guts for all those serving and ex-serving members.”
Mr Richards said the Palmerston City Council had been notified and was working to repair the damage by Anzac Day.
NT Police have called for witnesses in relation to the incident, saying CCTV captured an unknown offender just after midnight wearing dark coloured clothing accompanied by an accomplice wearing a white t-shirt. They are believed to be male youths.
Anyone with information on the incident should call police on 131 444.
Opposition leader Lia Finocchiaro commented on a post about the damage on the Palmerston RSL Sub-Brunch’s Facebook page, calling the vandalism “absolutely disgraceful.”
