The $6.8 million headquarters, to be officially opened next month, will become the base for rural firefighters, replacing “old re-used warehouses” at Winnellie and “some terrible old demountables” at Batchelor, bringing together about 400 staff and volunteers.

Environment Minister Eva Lawler said 75 full-time staff would work out of the facility and about 330 volunteers would have access.

Bushfires NT chief executive Collene Bremner welcomed the centre and said firefighters were already on top of preparations.

“I’m always concerned about the upcoming fire season (but) one of the advantages of COVID-19 is we’ve seen a lot more work done on people’s lots,” she said.

“We’re really focused on the early burning … we had to prioritise early burns.”
