Australia’s #1 eater smashes a 23 patty burger

THE NT’s most iconic man-eaters will become the meal at a croc-themed competitive eating event on today.

The Burger of Origin 2021 contest at the Berry Springs Tavern will feature Australia’s number one ranked professional competitive eater, Cal Stubbs, going head to head with five locals to prove who can demolish a giant croc burger the fastest.

To maximise the croc action, the event will kick off with NT croc wrangler Matt Wright wrestling a huge 4.5m saltie.

Stubbs said he was looking forward to chowing down on a croc burger at his first ever competitive eating event in the Territory.

“(Croc meat) is definitely a challenge. It’s a little stringier than chicken, so you have to have to break it down a little more. But I think I’ll be good,” he said.

He said he liked his chances but was expecting some stiff competition from the locals.

“The boys and girls up north don’t muck around when it comes to eating,” he said. “

“They’ve got grit and tenacity, which is important when eating something that would kill you, given the chance!”

Berry Springs Tavern duty manager Dan Woodall said the pub’s croc burger wouldn’t be easy to polish off in good time.

“It has two patties of thick croc meat, and each patty is about 2cm thick,” he said.

“It’s definitely a mouthful!”

The event, which will get underway at 3pm, is being hosted by Australian social media app LITT as part of a series of competitive eating contests across Australia.

From Monday, the tavern will also be celebrating by giving away free crocodile burgers and bar vouchers via a virtual reality treasure hunt on the app.
