A NORFORCE soldier died on Tuesday after suffering what defence sources believe was a heart attack.

A NORFORCE reservist has died overnight at Larrakeyah Barracks.

Brendan Brannelly, aged around 60, is believed to have died overnight due to a heart attack.

Despite resuscitation efforts the man could not be revived.

The long term Territorian worked as an assistant principal with the NT School of Distance Education.

The Education Department and School of Distance Education send their sincere condolences to Mr Brannelly’s family and friends.

Mr Brannelly had an distinguished career in education, dedicating 39 years to teaching Territory kids.

“His significant commitment to, and involvement in, health and physical education earnt him a School Sport Australia Service Award in 2001,” an Education spokeswoman said.

“Since 2007, he has been teaching at the Northern Territory School of Distance Education most recently as the Assistant Principal.

“The students and staff at the Northern Territory School of Distance Education are being supported during this time.”

A Defence spokeswoman said the death was unexpected.

“Defence is saddened to confirm that a Reservist from Army’s NORFORCE passed away unexpectedly late yesterday,” she said.

“Out of respect for this member’s family, Defence will be making no further comment at this time.”
