THE Federal Government’s new $5 million plus Maritime Security Training Centre planned for Darwin will boost the number of navy personnel in the Top End.
Federal Defence Minister Senator Linda Reynolds said work would start on the Security Training Centre this year.
She said the centre, which was revealed in the NT News last month, would facilitate the training of Royal Australian Navy members in the conduct of Maritime Security operations.
It will create about 10 jobs in the construction phase.
“It will provide opportunities for an increased presence of naval personnel in Darwin, potentially partnering with civilian support in running the centre,” she said.

“Operational boarding tasks are arguably one of the most dangerous tasks undertaken by the navy.
“The Armidale and Cape Class Patrol Boats and our future Arafura Class Offshore Patrol Vessels are navy’s principal maritime surveillance and response asset to support the protection of our borders.
“This Centre will support Northern Australia-based navy members in the maintenance
of competencies required to undertake these operational boarding tasks.
“The new facility will cater for an expected increase in training requirements associated with the introduction of the Offshore Patrol Vessel to conduct border protection and maritime patrol missions alongside other Australian vessels and with regional partners.
“It is expected that Defence will approach industry for design development support
later this year.”
