TRENT Melville reckons he is a winner and the two medals hanging around his neck last night were proof he can make that happen.
Melville’s five goals in Nightcliff’s 13-point win over a desperate St Mary’s in the 2019-20 Premier League grand final won him the coveted Chaney Medal as the best player on the ground.
The 28-year-old sharpshooter kicked two goals in the first two quarters and a crucial fifth in the last to be the rock that finally sank the St Mary’s ship.
“Every winning grand final is a highlight and to get the Chaney is something extra special,’’ Melville told the Sunday Territorian.
“But at the end of the day I go out there and play my best footy for the footy club and winning is what I’ve always been about.’’
The 2018-19 league leading goalkicker bounced back from a disappointing semi-final loss to be one of his side’s best in the two wins that landed back-to-back flags at Nightcliff.
“We were pretty confident we could win it after slipping up a couple of weeks ago, but it was probably the kick in the pants we needed,’’ he said.
“Remember St Mary’s were absolutely outstanding, they just kept coming and coming. We just stuck to the task and knew we’d get it done.’’
And will we see the No.20 jumper back in the goalsquare next season?
“I’m not sure yet, I’ve played a lot of footy lately and might go home for a rest for a while.
“But having said that, I’m in a pretty good mood right now and will probably come back.’’
