A MAN is under police guard at Westmead Hospital after lashing out with a knife and stabbing six teenagers in a bloody brawl in a Sydney’s North Shore park.

Police were called to a park on Gilroy Road in Turramurra at 11.40pm on Saturday where they found the man, 34, with head and upper body injuries and with six teenagers — aged between 15 and 19 — with varying stab wounds.

One 17-year-old victim from Mt Kuring-gai was recovering at Royal North Shore Hospital after undergoing surgery for stab wounds to his throat, chest and abdomen.

A young woman, 16, was also recovering at the same hospital after surgery for stab wounds to the neck and left forearm.

Detectives have been told the older man stabbed the teens following a row as he left Kipling’s Garage Bar on Eastern Rd, Turramurra.

Onlookers alerted police to the fracas as the man repeatedly lunged with the knife at the group of youngsters.

A 19-year-old man from Hornsby was also being treated in Westmead Hospital for a stab wound to his upper chest while three other teens, two aged 17 and one 15, were taken to other hospitals with stab wounds to their arms.

“A row between the man and the youngsters, who had been sitting in a park, triggered the fight — we’re still trying to get to the bottom of what happened,” a NSW police spokeswoman said.

“We’re waiting to interview the 34-year-old who is under police guard.”

Kipling’s Garage Bar, a restaurant and wine bar opposite Turramurra railway station, is one of only a handful of venues on the Upper North Shore and caters mostly to a local crowd

“It’s crazy here,” the resident said.

“We’ve never seen anything like it. There are people screaming, people everywhere.”

The stabbings mark a summer of rising knife crime Sydney’s summer beset by a horrific spate of knife crimes across NSW.

There were 228 call-outs to NSW Ambulance for stabbings in November and December alone.

There has been at least 14 since Christmas — including one incident which left a man dead inside the Church of Scientology in Chatswood as well as the alleged attempted murder of a 92-year-old.

Stabbings have been occurring at a rate of seven per day in NSW — 2828 people were attacked with knives, swords, screwdrivers and scissors in the year to December 2017, according to bureau of crime statistics data.

Forensic psychologist Julian Parmegiani said stabbing rampages, like Saturday’s, could be the result of copycat scenarios.

“They get inspired by some other case which is publicised. Someone’s lost the plot and they think I’ve lost the plot too, I’m going to do the same.”
