Nutrition showdown: which fast food is the healthiest?

Exclusive: Domino’s is shaking up its menu again — and this time it’s introducing plant-based pizzas for its customers.

The popular pizza chain told News Corp Australia it has been testing and trialling different flavour combinations for nine months to get the mix just right.

The new range of new pizzas is a revolutionary first for the company, and will roll out in September across the nation in all of its stores.

But the new pizzas being added to their menu are more about inclusiveness, rather than targeting vegans.

The three new pizzas coming to stores all have plant-based beef which was developed exclusively for the pizza chain in Brisbane.

The meat is made in Australia and comes from a soy protein.

Domino’s told News Corp today it is “free from artificial preservatives, flavours and colours, and is lower in saturated fat and higher in protein than its meat counterpart”.

The flavours coming to all stores include:

Domino’s Australia and New Zealand CEO Nick Knight said the new pizzas will be offered at the same price as any other pizza they have on the menu in their Traditional and Value range.

“Our existing Beef & Onion pizza is among our top five most popular pizzas nationally, and

beef is our second highest selling topping — so we already know it’s a product our customers

love,” he said.

“We set out to share this love by serving up a range of tasty plant-based pizzas that offers

our customers more choice at no extra charge.”

Domino’s Global Development Chef Michael Treacy said the trials for the new pizzas were extensive.

“Developed and made right here in Brisbane, our plant-based ingredients were created especially for us and can’t be found anywhere else on the planet,” he said.

“We tried and tested hundreds of flavours and variations from around the world before

settling on a plant-based ‘beef’ which has a similar taste and texture to our existing beef.”

While each pizza comes with cheeses including mozzarella and American cheddar cheese for those who want to still enjoy a part-vegan pizza, each of these three new pizzas will also appear on Domino’s menu in its vegan range with vegan-only ingredients like vegan cheese.

“To create more choice for our customers, we will be offering vegan, plant-based and meat

versions of each of these three pizzas,” he added.

Domino’s also confirmed it has more plant-based products on the way.

Domino’s is currently the largest pizza chain in Australia and New Zealand, with about 30 per cent of the $4 billion pizza market, beating Pizza Hut and Crust Pizza.

The new move comes as some of Domino’s stores are now trialling a Tap & Take Only payment model.

The trial is in NSW at Domino’s Newtown, Coffs Harbour and Wauchope, and in Queensland’s Calamvale and Surfers Paradise South.
