Domino’s new Pizza Checker in Australia and New Zealand to help make perfect pizzas

Domino’s are hoping to stamp out the days of customers complaining about their pizzas with a new hi-tech device that can check over every pizza made.

Nutrition showdown: which fast food is the healthiest?

Say goodbye to dud pizzas with poor toppings and not enough cheese.

Domino’s has finally launched its DOM Pizza Checker, a smart scanner that uses artificial intelligence to check over every pizza made in-store.

The Pizza Checker has been installed in every restaurant in Australia and New Zealand above the cut bench and will alert staff when a pizza is not up to scratch and needs to be made again.

Domino’s ANZ CEO Nick Knight told News Corp Australia the hi-tech device has its own in-built memory and has analysed more than one million pizzas.

He said it was developed over the past two years with Dragontail Systems — an Israeli-based company — which helped Domino’s harness the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning to deliver its new innovative technology solution.

“DOM Pizza Checker is a true ‘world first’ which has never been seen anywhere else. Currently, Australia and New Zealand are the only markets with this innovative new technology,” he said.

“Currently, DOM Pizza Checker can recognise, analyse and grade pizzas based on pizza type,

correct toppings and even distribution.

“It does this by capturing an image of the pizza and using artificial intelligence to compare this data with a large dataset of correct pizzas, making a quick assessment.”

Mr Knight also indicated that customers would soon be able to see their pizza in real-time as it’s being made.

“Later this year we will be releasing even more features, including the ability to provide customers with a real-time image of their pizza on the cut bench,” he said.

“As part of this process, they will also be notified if their pizza has failed our strong quality testing, resulting in a remake.”

The move to introduce the Pizza Checker comes as Domino’s is striving to shake up the fast food industry by making every pizza available to be picked up in three minutes or safely delivered in 10 minutes at each of its stores.

He told News Corp that the Albany Creek and Eatons Hill stores in Queensland currently hold the top two records for estimated delivery times, averaging 6:40 minutes and 6:51 minutes for deliveries across an entire week.

But Mr Knight also said he does not want quality of their product sacrificed even though they were making production and deliveries faster.

“While we want to get piping hot pizzas into our customers hands quickly, it’s more important that those pizzas are of a high standard, and look like the ones the customer ordered online or from the menu,” he said.

Mr Knight said this was not a short term goal, but a goal that requires many other changes to their business.

“Other areas helping us on this mission include, but aren’t limited to, increasing the use of e-bikes, faster ovens and now DOM Pizza Checker,” he said.

“Team members are using DOM Pizza Checker to put extra focus on product quality — things like topping type, volume and spread; and that’s showing in the results.”

Domino’s is currently the largest pizza chain in Australia and New Zealand, with about 30 per cent of the $4 billion pizza market, beating Pizza Hut and Crust Pizza.

Pizza Pan Group, the Australian franchisee for Pizza Hut, has also engaged Dragontail Systems to help roll out its Algo and drivers platform technologies.

The new system helps automate the kitchen flow and the process of dispatching drivers.
