A Geelong father has set off on a gruelling mission to raise thousands for children in need this Christmas, vowing to run a half marathon a day for 21 consecutive days.

Mount Duneed dad Nathanial Blyth, 33, said he was inspired by the work of Geelong Mums, an organisation that aims to help underprivileged kids up to six years old, after reflecting on how fortunate his own daughter was “to have everything she wants”.

He has banked five 21km runs already in his attempt to raise $21,000 for the organisation’s festive appeal.

“I wanted to try and give something back, and just thinking about other kids out there that don’t have what others do really hit home,” he said.
“I love running, so I thought this might be a good idea.”
Mr Blyth completed the Melbourne Marathon in October despite injuring two disks in his back on the eve of the race.

He still managed to finish in a respectable 3h 26m.

“I blew them both two days before the marathon so it was the most painful three hours of my life,” he laughed.

He has been running from Mt Duneed to Barwon Heads for the appeal, and will rotate the routes through Torquay and Geelong.

“I am getting through it,” he said.

“I’m trying to tick them off in the morning.

“I have a few friends that want to join me on the weekend which is nice, so hopefully we can raise as much money as we can.”

A spokeswoman from Geelong Mums said Mr Blyth’s efforts would help change the lives of many babies and children.
“We can’t wait to cheer on Nathaniel as he runs to raise money for our Christmas Appeal,” she said.
“Thank you for your generosity, kind heart, and dedication to children in need.”
