An elderly man has died after his motorbike collided with a kangaroo in a tragic crash in the Flinders Ranges.

Emergency services were called to the Flinders Ranges Way – 40km north of Hawker – just after 9.30am following reports a motorbike collided with a kangaroo and then a tree.

The 73-year-old Alice Springs man, who was riding a Triumph motorcycle, sadly died at the scene despite a helicopter arriving just after 9.40pm to transfer him to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The road is still closed as Major Crash Officers make their way to the scene.

Flinders Ranges Way is closed north of Rawnsley Park Station for vehicles travelling north.

Police instruct motorists travelling from Hawker to Wilpena Pound or north of Rawnsley Park to take the Outback Hwy and Parachilna Gorge Rd.

Motorists heading south on Flinders Ranges Way, north of Rawnsley Park, will need to take the same detour.
