More shade structures on the way for Darwin’s CBD

THE construction of two new city shade structures will get underway in the coming months in a bid to cool down Darwin’s CBD.

Member for Port Darwin Paul Kirby announced Tuesday a $824,000 contract has been awarded to PTM Group Pty Ltd to complete the government’s Austin Lane Streetscape Project.

The works will include building two new covered walkways between Cavenagh St and the Mall, installing new tree plantings, seating and upgraded kerbing.

The project, part of the $200 million Cities Deal, is expected to be completed at the end of the year.

Mr Kirby said the works to revitalise Austin Lane were being done in partnership

with Darwin council and

were expected to support 40 local jobs.

“This project will help transform Darwin CBD into a more pedestrian-friendly space, focusing on creating cooling spaces between buildings,” he said.
