Territorians are closer than ever to catching the million-dollar fish as several red tags get bumped to platinum.

There are now 24 barramundi with the chance to win $1 million swimming through NT waterways after 12 $10,000 tags got an upgrade.

Major Events Minister Brent Potter said it was exciting to think one lucky fisho was so close to becoming a millionaire.

“The Million Dollar Fish continues to be a massive catch for the Territory and interstate visitors, last season alone brought over 10,000 keen anglers from interstate to the NT, generating over $70 million dollars for our economy,” he said.

“Our local business owners too are rewarded by Territory Labor’s Million Dollar Fish because there has never been a better reason to stock up on fishing supplies and hit the water.”

There are still 80 $10,000 fish to be caught.

Recreational Fishing Minister Joel Bowden said wetting a line was a “drawcard to the Territory” and a signature NT hobby.

“The Territory boasts some of the most sustainable and well-managed fisheries in the world, as well as some of the best fisho’s so if you’re planning to get out on the water to be sure to register,” he said.

After a million-dollar barra is caught, the remaining 23 will revert to $10,000 fish for the rest of the season.
