Man tries to run car into woman near Humpty Doo in string of alleged domestic violence charges

A man has turned himself in following a string of alleged domestic violence offences where a child was allegedly taken and police officer dragged by a car.

Domestic violence risk increases 35% when women earn more than male partners

A woman was allegedly chased and grabbed by the throat by her partner, who is also accused of attempting to hit her with his car several times.

A police officer was also allegedly dragged by the vehicle as they attempted to arrest the accused male.

Early on Friday, a woman and a man were travelling along Girraween Road, near Humpty Doo, when an argument started.

The 20-year-old woman asked the man, aged 21, to stop the vehicle and as she tried to exit, police say, he grabbed her by the throat and forced her to remain in the car.

“The woman managed to escape however (and) the man gave chase on foot before tackling her to the ground,” a police spokesman said.

“She pushed him off and hid in nearby bushland.

“The man returned to his vehicle and attempted to try (to) hit the woman with his vehicle several times before she alerted a nearby resident, who contacted police.

“The woman returned to her residence when she noticed that the property had been unlawfully entered and her two-year-old daughter was missing.”

While searching the area, police found the man and child inside the vehicle.

An officer attempted to arrest the man when he tried to drive off.

The officer’s arm became trapped in the vehicle and he was dragged a short distance, but was soon able to free himself with only minor injuries.

“The man returned to the woman’s address before leaving the child and fleeing the scene,” a police spokesman said.

“Later that afternoon, the man contacted police stating he wished to surrender, however, did not show up.

“The man made contact again with police (on Sunday) and he was subsequently arrested without incident in Winnellie.”

The man has been charged with three counts each of deprivation of liberty and aggravated assault, as well as two counts of recklessly endangering serious harm.

He also faces one count each of unlawful entry (occupied dwelling at night), escape lawful custody and assault police.

The accused was remanded to appear in the Darwin Local Court on Monday.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Jon Beer said police would like to speak with any witnesses who were in the area or have relevant information.

“It is mandatory in the Northern Territory to report incidents of domestic and family violence,” Sergeant Beer said.

“We ask the community to take this obligation seriously because you can help someone who is suffering at the hands of someone else.”
