A prisoner who was at large for five days allegedly slipped away from prison guards while waiting for an ankle monitoring bracelet to be fitted.

Police rearrested 33-year-old Lawrence Daniels on August 12, in Alice Springs after he escaped from Alice Springs community corrections on Thursday, August 9.

His five day foray landed him before Judge David Bamber in Alice Springs Local Court for a brief mention on August 20.

Representing Mr Daniels, defence lawyer Charlotte Nichol said her client had allegedly escaped as he was waiting to have an ankle monitoring bracelet fitted.

“The allegation is that Mr Daniels left the corrections office at a point between which correctional officers started to pin there to ultimately have an ankle bracelet fitted,” she said.

Mr Daniels appeared from the dock in a prison uniform.

Ms Nichols said Mr Daniels needs an interpreter and there were none available for his mention before Judge Bamber.

Earlier this year, Mr Daniels was sentenced to 12 months jail for an aggravated assault on May 3.

Mr Daniels was remanded in custody with Judge Bamber adjourning the matter until August 26.
