ARALUEN MLA Robyn Lambley is concerned about what another major blackout could mean for residents in Alice Springs’ aged-care homes
Alice Springs power system still exposed 18 months after major blackout Utilities Commission says in latest progress report
THE high risk of another major blackout in Alice Springs, as highlighted in a recent Utilities Commission report, poses a danger to the town’s elderly residents, according to Araluen MLA Robyn Lambley.

“Reliable power is a priority for everyone in Alice Springs and Central Australia but clearly for the NT government it is not,” Ms Lambley said. “This makes the situation at our aged care facilities south of the gap (Old Timers and Hetti Perkins) very concerning.”
Ms Lambley is calling for the government to commit to investing in a power backup supply, similar to that at Alice Springs Hospital, at these facilities for use in emergencies.
“People living in aged care facilities must have a reliable electricity supply for a whole range of reasons.
“In light of the recent damning findings of the federal royal commission into age care neglect, the provision of an emergency electricity supply to these Alice Springs aged care facilities must be a priority.”
Opposition Essential Services spokesman and Braitling MLA Joshua Burgoyne also criticised the government over the report, which showed that while two-thirds of the recommendations made after the 2019 blackout incident have since been completed by Power and Water Corp and T-Gen, another 11 remain only “under way” or “partially complete”.

“Central Australia residents deserve the same service delivery as anywhere else in the Northern Territory,” he said.
Essential Services Minister Eva Lawler said most of the report’s recommendations were complete and others were being progressed “as a priority”.
