‘Hydrogen plays a key role towards the Territory’s target of net-zero emissions’: NT joins hydrogen push

The Northern Territory has joined a network of regional hydrogen technology clusters as part of a drive to establish a nationwide hydrogen cluster.
Spearheaded by National Energy Resources Australia (NERA), the national hydrogen cluster “will establish a global identity and a recognised brand for Australian hydrogen technology and expertise”.
The Darwin Innovation Hub has been given $200,000 from the Territory Government and NERA to take part in the national cluster.
Darwin Innovation Hub general manager Emma Nesbitt said the announcement is a fantastic step forward for the hydrogen future of the Northern Territory.

“Hydrogen plays a key role towards the Territory’s target of net-zero emissions,” she said. “We look forward to working alongside NERA, the Territory Government and our key stakeholders to develop the capacity of businesses and assets that already exist in the Territory, and to be able to drive forward the hydrogen supply chain aiming to achieve the Territory’s Renewable Hydrogen Strategy.”
The national hydrogen cluster will aid the development of the hydrogen supply chain, reduce overlaps and identify gaps in the development, deployment, and commercialisation of new hydrogen focused technologies.
With their funding the Darwin Innovation Hub plan will play a central role in connecting Territory hydrogen projects to the export market, using the Territory’s deep sea port and geographical advantage to South East Asia.
Renewables and Energy Minister Eva Lawler said the Territory Government is positioning the NT as a leader in the world transition to renewable hydrogen.

“The announcement of this funding aligns with the Northern Territory’s Renewable Hydrogen Strategy – turning our natural competitive advantages into clean, permanent local jobs,” she said.
“We are bringing the NT to the forefront of the developing renewable hydrogen industry with large areas of land with high solar irradiance and close proximity to export markets. Through projects such as the Hydrogen Clusters and our investment in renewables, we are creating new industries and jobs for Territorians.”
