A taxi driver who received horrific injuries after being run over by a van in a road rage incident has criticised the police investigation of the matter.

Southport man Stephen Gleeson suffered a ‘degloved’ left thigh with the loss of skin and tissue, multiple broken ribs, a broken shoulder and a spleen injury after being run down in Palm Beach on July 26, a hospital discharge document stated.

He spent two weeks in hospital recovering from the injuries before being discharged.

The Bulletin understands there are conflicting accounts of what occurred.

No charges have been laid seven weeks on from the incident.

Mr Gleeson said he was yet to be formally interviewed by police.

In a statement he provided to them, the 50-year-old said he was driving his taxi on the Gold Coast Highway at Palm Beach when a white van hit the front left-hand wheel area of his car.

Mr Gleeson said he pulled over and stopped the car, but the van continued a short distance until it stopped at traffic lights at the intersection of Twenty Third Ave.

The Southport man said he stepped in front of the van because the other driver had refused to stop and exchange details.

He said he went over the to driver’s side and reached his arm inside the vehicle to turn the ignition off.

Police said the interaction escalated and an altercation ensued between the two before the van driver drove off.

“In doing so his vehicle collided with the 49-year-old man (Mr Gleeson), causing him to fall to the roadway where he was run over by the rear right-wheel of the van,” a police spokeswoman said.

“A short time later, the 63-year-old van driver pulled over on the side of the road at Currumbin and contacted police.

“The 49-year-old man suffered serious injuries and was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital for further treatment.”

There were no reported injuries to the 63-year-old driver.

The next thing Mr Gleeson remembered was waking up in hospital.

“When I first opened my eyes, I had all these tubes hanging out my mouth and no idea what was going on,” he said.

“The one thing I remember is my 17-year-old son standing over me and his tear dropped on my face.”

Mr Gleeson was discharged from hospital two weeks after the incident on his 50th birthday and attributed his recovery to the “incredible” work of the GGUH trauma team.

Weeks on, Mr Gleeson is still struggling to breathe properly and has a limp.

It is not known what his recovery will look like and when he will be able to return to work.

“When you have an accident or a minor fender bender, do what’s right and exchange names and addresses and move on,” he said.

“This is a life-changing event for me. Will I use my left arm again? I’m going to carry titanium around in me for the rest of my life and I’m learning to breathe again.”

Mr Gleeson has criticised the police investigation of the matter and said he was still waiting to be interviewed.

“I have been home since August 9 and no one (from Queensland Police Service) has made contact to come and see me,” he said.

“I want it concluded.”

The police investigation remains ongoing.
