Gold Coast shooting investigation

Police are still hunting those responsible for opening fire on a man with a shotgun outside a Gold Coast home and leaving him bleeding on a driveway in the early hours of Sunday.

A crime scene was established at the property on Cirrus Way East at Coomera shortly after emergency services were called about 6am to a reported disturbance.

Gold Coast Superintendent Brett Jackson said: “A 23-year-old male from Coopers Plains was on the driveway with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his right leg.

“Significant injuries with pellet material still in the foot.”

The victim was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries where he has since undergone surgery and remains in a stable condition.

Detectives attended the scene and door knocked homes and forensics crews processed the scene. A spent shotgun shell was found by police at the home but the firearm involved still hasn’t be recovered.

The police investigation was still in its early stages on Monday morning according to Supt Jackson, with officers still unsure whether the shooting was targeted.

“We don’t have any understanding (of what occurred), most witnesses were asleep at the time,” he said.

“The victim is speaking to detectives. I can confirm that the victim was not an occupant of that residence.”

Supt Jackson said it was a priority for detectives to not just apprehend those responsible but locate the firearm involved and remove it off the streets.

Earlier

Police initially believed the victim had been shot with an arrow outside the property on Sunday morning.

Following further inquiries by detectives, the Queensland Police Service issued a statement several hours later confirming the incident involved a firearm.

“Inquiries indicate the 23-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to the right ankle,” A QPS spokesman said.

“The offender is believed to have fled shortly before police arrived.”

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said paramedics treated a male patient with a leg injury before he was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a potentially life-threatening condition.

Coomera resident, Toby Schofield said residents heard a loud bang come from the home about 5am before more commotion about an hour later.

“Apart from the noise earlier on I didn’t hear anything at all until I saw the ambulance and police in the street,” Mr Schofield said.

“On my (CCTV) cameras you can see a silver car speed away from that direction then I reckon maybe ten minutes later some bloke comes running from that way. He didn’t look like he was on a jog – put it that way.”

Police established a crime scene at the address and a number of officers remained outside standing guard at 10am with the front driveway cordoned off as forensics crews processed the evidence.

Officers were closely examining a silver sedan parked in the driveway. Detectives had been doorknocking homes and speaking with residents.

What appeared to be blood stained clothing, towels and a pair of shoes were left lying on the driveway to the home. Evidence markers had been placed across the front entrance.

No has been taken into custody over the incident and at least one person is at large.
