A car has exploded and a second vehicle damaged after a fire in a busy Gold Coast shopping centre carpark.
Firefighters were called to the Runaway Bay Shopping Centre carpark about 12.50pm on Thursday after a black Mercedes was spotted with flames coming from the bonnet.
Customers were seen running from the pet shop to quickly move their cars away from the flames.
The fire was so intense it began to melt the shade sail above the parked car.
After the fire had been burning, an explosion was seen in the Mercedes.
A green Mazda hatchback parked in front of the flaming Mercedes was also damaged in the fire.
Fire crews arrived on scene and took about 10 minutes to extinguish the blaze.
As the firefighters entered the carpark the truck became momentarily stuck on a swinging height boom.
It was also impeded by an elderly driver who reversed towards the firetruck as it blared its horn.
It is not clear what started the fire.
