Personal trainer Flick Abfalter has won state titles in bodybuilding and now helps people become their fittest and healthiest self.
The 24-year-old grew up competing in surf lifesaving and gymnastics before she started to work in the fitness industry at group experience studio F45.
“One of the girls there was prepping for a (body building) competition,” she said.
“She was shredded and I thought ‘I want to look like that’.”
Ms Abfalter then started to work with Torquay bodybuilding coach and trainer Jake Abel in 2021.
“We were in lockdown during prep and it was pretty hectic because our competitions kept getting pushed back,” she said.
“I had my 21st birthday during my prep so I had chicken, rice and green beans for my birthday dinner.
“It was miserable.”
Ms Abfalter said preparing for a body building competition was both physically and mentally challenging.
“I’ve always competed at a high level so I know how to perform under pressure,” she said.
“You either rise to the occasion or you sink with the pressure.”
Ms Abfalter won multiple bodybuilding state titles in 2021 and 2023 and also placed fifth in a national competition.
In 2023, she started working as a personal trainer at Mr Abel’s gym Grunt HQ in Torquay.
“I’ve redirected my focus now to helping clients break their yo-yo diets that a lot of them are trapped in,” she said.
Ms Abfalter loves to push her physical and mental condition to the limit.
“In the fitness industry, everyone has a different goal,” she said.
“They might be exercising to improve their mindset or mental health.
“I love seeing different people come together for their love of the gym.”
We have relaunched the Best of Geelong series to help our readers discover the incredible businesses and individuals in our community. The way it works is in three stages:
1. We put out an initial call for nominations over a week period. This happens on our various social media accounts as well as on our website.
2. After nominations close, we open the voting stage on our website. The businesses or individuals that received the highest number of nominations will progress to the voting stage. The voting stage runs for one week.
3. Once voting has closed, a winner will be announced on our website usually a few days after this stage concludes. At the same time we will also announce up to nine other individuals with the highest amount of votes in the poll.
*The Geelong Advertiser reserves the right to disqualify any entries to the Best Of competition.
