As the cost of living continues its upward climb, new data has revealed Geelong motorists are paying less at the pump.

According to the latest figures from RACV’s fuel watch team, local customers are paying 30 cents less at the bowser than they were last year.

In July 2022, the average price of unleaded fuel in the city was 206.7 cents per litre, compared with 175 cents per litre last week.

RACV head of policy James Williams told the Geelong Advertiser prices across town had dropped over the last month.

“Prices for unleaded fuel in Geelong have dropped over the last month, with the average price starting at 197.8 cents per litre on June 5 and sitting at an average of 175.5 cents per litre as of Wednesday, July 5,” he said.

But the average unleaded price sat above Melbourne last week, with citysiders paying an average of 168 cents per litre.

According to online fuel comparison tool PetrolSpy, Ampol Bell Post Hill, APCO outlets in South and East Geelong, United in Manifold Heights and the Batesford Roadhouse offered some of the cheapest prices across the city.

Along the coast, both Ampol and Coles Express in Torquay and APCO at Barwon Heads were offering deals under the 175 cents per litre average.

Oil prices skyrocketed around the world last year amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and supply concerns in Europe.

The federal government cut the fuel excise for six months in response, but the full tax was reinstated late last year.

Mr Williams said the price at the pump was determined by a number of factors.

“The trend for Geelong fuel prices over the coming weeks will depend on a range of factors, such as levels of competition in different suburbs, wholesale prices and taxes, and other factors,” he said.

“At this stage it is difficult to predict.”

APCO director Peter Anderson said he’d been relieved to see a steadying of prices over the last year.

“We’ve definitely seen prices come down and even out over the last year,” he said.

“Geelong is definitely cheaper than other areas, and Ballarat is faring well too.”
